A suspect snatched an iPhone4 from the hands of a male victim on the train. The suspect then fled to the street with a witness chasing him. The suspect was described as a black male in his 20's, 5'7" tall, wearing a white beanie, a black or blue jacket with white trim. An officer located a male matching the suspect's description a short distance away. Three witnesses were brought to the scene and the witness who chased the suspect from the train positively identified the male detainee as the person who stole the phone. The detainee did not have any phones on his person when contacted by the officers. The detainee was taken into custody and transported to Lake Merritt Station. Further investigation and review of available video footage from the station resulted in the investigating officers concluding the detainee was not the person who stole the victim's phone, despite the positive identification by the witness. The detainee was released without further delay. The suspect in this case was not located. The video footage will be forwarded to detectives for further investigation.
