Criminal Threats/Psychiatric Evaluation (Prohibition Order)

July 6, 2016, 10:25 p.m.

North Berkeley
Case: 1607-0357

A station agent reported that a male suspect, after fare evading, threatened to shoot the agent. An officer responded and detained the suspect. The station agent, who feared for this safety as result of the threat, expressed a willingness to pursue a criminal complaint so the suspect was placed under arrest for criminal threats. As the officer prepared to transport him to jail, however, the suspect physically resisted and refused to be placed in a patrol car. The officer, joined by an assisting officer, used physical force/control holds to restrain the suspect, who also made verbal threats to harm himself. Paramedics responded and eventually transported the suspect to a local hospital, along with a police hold, for a psychiatric evaluation; he was also issued a prohibition order. There were no injuries sustained by the involved parties. A sergeant responded to investigate the use of force.
