Case: 1206-2384

A patron at the Lafayette Station heard a loud "snap" and then saw a male, BM, 20-30 yrs, 5'-10" to 6', slender, wearing an A's ball cap, blk overcoat, with a red undershirt and blu or blk pants, with blk and whi tennis shoes, and a blk backpack, removing a bike from the bike racks.  The patron notified the station agent before leaving on a train.  The male subject, returned to the Lafayette station about 20 minutes later without a bike.  The agent saw the subject take a bike that was leaning against a rail at the station and then go up to the platform.  The agent notified police believing the subject was stealing bikes.  Trains were checked for the subject with negative results.  The patrol watch commander checked the surveillance cameras in the ISRC and located the subject, who matched the description, on the Orinda platform with two bicycles in his possession.  Trains were briefly held while officers made contact with the subject.  The station agent went to the Orinda Station where he positively identified the subject.  The male provided false ID to the officers upon contact and could not explain why he was in possession of two bikes.  Officers were finally able to ID the male and found that he was on probation out of Contra Costa County for theft and assault with a deadly weapon with a full search clause.  The officers searched the suspect and located cutting tools commonly used to cut cables and locks.  The suspect was placed under arrest and a detective was called to interview the suspect.  The suspect was booked into the Martinez  Jail on the above listed charges.  A probation search of the subject's residence was later conducted.
